The City and The City Elements as the chronotope of individual history: Demir Özlü case

The main purpose in this thesis is to examine chronotopes in the stories and the narratives written by Demir Özlü with reference to Russian literature theoretician Mikhail M. Bakhtin's "chronotope" concept. Since Bakhtin indicated that it is possible to increase the number of chronotopes, new chronotopes which we determined in Demir Özlü's stories and narratives are examined together with the main chronotopes determined by Bakhtin. In this context, at the "Introduction" chapter, we explained the chronotope concept in general terms, reviewed some different approaches on this concept and mentioned about Demir Özlü's life, his works and his storytelling. In the first section of the work that is named " 'THE CITY' AS A CHRONOTOPE IN DEMİR ÖZLÜ'S STORIES AND NARRATIVES", four cities are specified which hold the characteristics of a chronotope in Özlü's stories and narratives, with reference to the idea that approves cities as chronotopes. In this context, the emotion and values owned by Beyoğlu, Stockholm, Paris and Berlin in Özlü's stories and narratives are examined. In the second section that is named "OTHER CHRONOTOPES IN DEMİR ÖZLÜ'S STORIES AND NARRATIVES", the basic chronotopes determined by Bakhtin and the other chronotopes which we determined are examined over Özlü's stories and narratives. Among the basic chronotopes determined by Bakhtin, the ones which we detected in Özlü's stories and narratives could be listed as encounter, road, castle, drawing room-salon, rural landscape, public square and staircase chronotopes. The other chronotopes which we determined that are in the similar context with castle and drawing room-salon chronotopes are also added on those basic chronotopes. The places shining out with their historicity are added on the context of castle chronotope and chilhood room-home chronotope is added on the context of drawing room-salon chronotope.
