Abstract (EN)

Depression and anxiety are among the most common psychologic illness in people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), have been associated with poor outcomes such as inrcreased graft failure, return to dialysis, morbidity and mortality. Screning and effective treatment of depression and anxiety is recommend in ESRD patients. In this study, we aim to compare anxiety, depression prevalence and quality of life in hemodialysis and renal transplant patients. Patients with ESDR (100 hemodialysis, 100 renal transplant) and control subjects (100) have participated in this cross-sectional study. Participants were assessed by sociodemographic and clinical questionnaires, SF-36 Quality of Life Scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale. Groups had similar distribution in terms of age and gender (p <0.05). According to the HAD scale, anxiety and depression risks were determined as 45% - %65 of hemodialysis patients, as 21% - 31% of renal transplant patients and as 28% - 42% of control groups. There was a weak positive correlation between depression and age of all patients (r = 0.289, p <0.001), and a negative correlation between age and SF-36 subscale scores. There was no significant correlation between age and anxiety. Also, there was no significant difference in the risk of anxiety, depression and SF-36 subscle scores between male and female (p> 0.05). A positive correlation was found between anxiety and depression scores (r = 0.635, p <0.001). Depression and anxiety risks were significantly low in patients with high education levels (p <0.001). All subscales scores of three groups except the pain subscale scores was statistically (p <0.001). The quality of life in hemodialysis patients were lower than renal transplant patients, but quality of life in all patients were lower than the healthy subjects. As a result, renal transplant patients had the low risk of depression and anxiety, higher quality of life according to patients who were on hemodialysis.
