ABSTRACTMaster ThesisThe Effect of Using Online Puzzle to The Secondary School Students' Fundamentals of Network Course in Academic Achievement and Retention of LearningEmrah AYDEMİRThe University Of FıratThe Institute Of Education ScienceDepartment of Computer Education and Instructional TechnologyElazığ ? 2012, Pages: XIII + 98Internet technologies which are improving and increasing each day, found usage in many fields. Especially in education, those technologies are used for supporting and providing ease for learning. Online and offline, many different tools are used in very different ways for giving students more permenant and enjoyable education. Various materials are developed for support in education. In this study, an online puzzle is developed for increased permanence in education. With help of this developed medium, the instructor had opportunity to repeat his/her lesson before he actually started. By inputting answers to system, it created a puzzle. User names and passwords were given to students defined by instructor. After lesson is finished, students logged into system by their user names and password, and solved the puzzle. By principle of instant feedback in education, their wrong answer shown in red and correct answers shown in green instantly. By this way, students could change their answers. Their scores are calculated by the system, depending on their timing, answers and entry amount; thus, a competitive enviroment is created. This research is done to prove usage of online puzzle in learning process improves permenance of learned information. It is believed the findings of this research will make a significant contribution into support of diciplinary education by new technologies. In research pre-test and final-test grouped experimental pattern is used. Sixty students participated in the study, whom seperated into experiment and control groups equally.During the process, control groups had their lessons traditionally while the experiment groups used the online puzzle with the prepared medium, along with traditional methods. As a quantitative information gathering method, success test and survery methods developed by researcher are used. Experiment and control groups had pre-test and final-test applied and after four weeks of experiment, academic success test is repeated again to measure permanence. Hypothesis are evaluated by ratio frequency and t-test for dependent-independent groups. In the analysis of quantitative information was used as computer supported stastical software. As a result of analysis, no meaningful difference is founded between experiment and control groups of pre-test. In final-test, a difference found in favor of experiment group. In permenance test, a difference found in favor of experiment group again. As a result of research, it has been reached usage of online puzzle improves permenance of learned information.Key Words: Online puzzle, Web based learning, e-learning
