Abstract (EN)

Polat O, The Histopathological and Biochemical Investigation of the Effect of Shepherd's Purse (Capsella Bursa-Pastoris L.) on Ethyl Alcohol-Induced Liver Damage, Van Yüzüncü Yıl University, Institute of Health Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Pathology, Master Thesis, Van, 2019. The aim of this study is to investigate the protective effect of shepherd's purse (SP) herbal tea against liver toxicity with ethyl alcohol. For this purpose, 32 male wistar albino rats were randomly divided into 4 groups. Control group; rats were fed with standard rat pellet feed. Alcohol group; 4 ml / kg 30% ethyl alcohol with orogastric gavage was given once daily. Alcohol + herbal tea group: 4 ml / kg 30% ethyl alcohol once daily and 1 ml / kg SP tea daily with orogastric gavage were given. Herbal tea group: 1 ml / kg SP tea was given with orogastric gavage once a day. At the end of the 60-day trial period, necropsies of rats were performed and tissue and blood samples were taken. Taken tissue samples were stained with Hematoxylin & Eosin (H & E) and histopathological examination was performed. Taken blood samples were centrifuged and serum was removed. Serum enzymes from the serum of liver damage Alanine transaminase (ALT), Aspartic transaminase (AST), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme levels and Cholesterol, Triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol and Fasting blood glucose levels were studied. Histopathologically, degenerative-necrotic changes in the liver of alcohol group rats were found to be partially reduced in the SP treatment group. Biochemically, the levels of AST, ALT, and ALP in the alcohol group, which increased compared to the control group decreased in the SP treatment group. While it was observed that SP treatment had a positive effect on triglyceride and HDL levels, SP treatment was found to have a negative effect on LDL and cholesterol levels. Consequently, since it has been found that SP tea reduces the liver damage but causes an increase in LDL and cholesterol levels, it has not been determined with certainty that SP tea application provides full protection against the liver toxication generated by ethyl alcohol.
