Retrospective evaluation of the effect of hospitalization positions on cerebral blood flow of patients in the neonatal intensive care unit of ÇÜTF Balcali Hospital

Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of the lying positions of patients hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of ÇÜTF Balcalı Hospital on cerebral blood flow. Materials and Methods: 33 patients hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine between January 2020 and July 2020, retrospectively with the data obtained from the patient records, the diagnoses, gender, birth weeks, ages, 1st and 5th minutes APGAR scores, delivery types and birth places, height / weight and head circumference values, Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) and Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography (TCD) values measured in the supine and prone lying position were recorded on data collection forms. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to their supine and prone lying positions. Results: 33 newborn babies were included in the study. There was no statistically significant difference between PI (Pulsatile Index) (p = 0.882) and RI (Resistance Index) (p = 0.887) values measured in supine and prone positions. Cerebral regional oxygen saturation (CrSO2) was statistically significant at the border (p = 0.054). A statistically significant, strong and positive correlation was found between PI and RI in the supine position (r = 0.902 p = <0.001) and in the prone position (r = 0.906 p = <0.001). The relationship between CrSO2 and PI and RI was not statistically significant (p => 0.05). Conclusion: New studies with larger samples are needed to show the effect of lying position on cerebral blood flow in the neonatal period.
