Abstract (EN)

The relationship between body mass index (BMI) and depression has been the subject of much research. Knowing the factors that cause obesity, weakness and depression is valuable for early diagnosis and treatment. The aim of this study is; to determine the BMI and depression levels in individuals who apply to the Dicle University Faculty of Medicine Family Medicine Polyclinic for any reason, and to evaluate the relationship between them. Our research was designed as a descriptive-sectional study and 403 individuals participated in the study. Beck Depression Scale (BDI) and a questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic data were applied to the participants. BMI was calculated using the participants' height and weight measurements. The relationship between the participants' BDI score and BMI was examined. Ethics committee approval and consent of the participants were obtained for the study. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the SPSS 26.0 program. The mean age of the individuals participating in our study was 29.00±9.56 years. 254 (63%) of the participants were women. There was no significant correlation between BMI value and BDI scores of the individuals participating in the study (r=- 0,036, p=0.492). A significant correlation was found between the age of the individuals participating in the study and their BMI scores (r=0,459, p=0.001). While BMI levels were found to be significantly higher in men than women (p=0.001), BDI scores in women were found to be significantly higher than men (p=0.001). It was found that smoking did not affect BMI, but increased BDI scores (p=0,015). It was determined that income level did not affect BMI value and BDI scores were higher in individuals with low income level (p=0,030). While it was determined that the BMI value was lower in unemployed people (p=0,017), it was determined that the occupation did not affect the BDI score (p=0,834). As a result; primary care physicians play an important role in physical and mental illnesses because they see easily accessible, undifferentiated diseases. It is of great importance that primary care physicians know and use existing scales for the screening of obesity and depreesion.
