Retrospective evaluation of patients who inserted intravenous port catheter by Dokuz Eylül University Medical Oncology Department

Abstract (EN)
İntravenous port catheter as long term venous access device is grown up about application of chemoterapy, blood products, totally parenteral nutrition, antibiotics and other intravenous treatments and sampling the blood. İt?s important part of treatment in many center.İt is first time to insertion of intravenous port catheter by medical oncologist in our department. We inserted the intravenous port catheter by percutanously technique via right jugular vein.İn this study, we aimed to evaluate 2179 oncology patients inserted intravenous port catheter by us between August 2004 to November 2010. For this purpose, files and records of all patients who vizited DEUTF Medical Oncology Department are searched retrospectively, and detected patient who inserted intravenous port catheter by medical oncologist between August 2004 to November 2010. We excluded patient who inserted peritoneal port catheter and who inserted by another depatment. Age, gender, primary disease, totally port catheter number inserted to one patient, vein which insert port catheter, date which insert and removed port catheter, acute and chronic complications are recorded. All data are loaded the Excel. Patients?s data are analized by SPSS programe. Descriptive statistics related patients are obtained.We performed intravenous port catheter insertion to 2179 patients. İntravenous port catheter is inserted once to 2017 patients, twice to 145 patients, 3 times to 14 patients and 4 times to 3 patients of them. Ports are removed once from 145 patients, twice from 14 patients, 3 times from 14 patients and 4 times from 3 patients of them. All intravenous port catheters are inserted by percutaneus technique. İntravenous port catheters are inserted to jugular vein in 2055 (94.3%) patients, to femoral vein in 90 (4.1%) patients and to subclavian vein in 34 (1.6%) patients.While the 2167 (99.4%) patients don?t have the acute complication, 12 patients had: pneumothorax in 9 (0.04%) patients, hematoma in 2 (0.009%) patients and AF in 1 (0.0046%) patient.When we looked chronic complications, we found 19(0.87%) locally port infection, 19(0.087%)port occlusion, 15 (0.68%) deep vein tromboses, 11 (0.50%)port dislocation, 10 (0.45%) Catheter related blood stream infection, 2 (0.09%) skin necroses, 1 (0.045%) pinch-off syndrome, 1 (0.045%) reservoir entrance wound.Between patients who are removed the port catheter, we determined 213(74.4%) finish of treatment, 19 (6.6%) port occlusion, 15 (5.2%) deep vein thromboses, 14 (4.8%) locally port infection, 11 (0.50%)port dislocation, 10 (0.45%) Catheter related blood stream infection, 2 (0.09%) skin necroses, 1 (0.045%) pinch-off syndrome, 1 (0.045%) reservoir entrance wound of 286 port discharge procedures.İn Conclusion, our intravenous port complications were determined lower than literature, and this study showed that Medical oncologists can insert intravenous port.Keywords: intravenous port catheter, adult patients
