The life and opinions of Ergun Göze

This study, consisting of an introduction and three chapters, aims to show how Ergun Göze was like a domino block in the Turkish political life and to express through his writings the cyclic state in the relations of opposing and ruling parties and the bottlenecks Turkish democracy has been through. Before this framework, the form opposing and ruling party relations had during the transition period of shifting from single party to multi parties has been reviewed shortly. Furthermore in the first chapter, we want to touch the facts affecting the intellectual motivation and professional life as well as his family, social background and cultural envirenment established Ergun Göze's intellectual backround. On the other hand, social and political dynamics during the period when democracy in Turkey became institutionalised have been emphasized; and polemics he had to face in his newspaper column, and the legal lawsuits resulted from these polemics and how those persons and institutions emphasizing democracy were sincere in their statements- all these issues have been tried to be clarified. In the second chapter, the ideological, cultural, religious and sociological actions shaping intellectual life of Ergun Göze and the philosophers affecting him with examples have been reviewed and explained. It has been analysed by looking into the background of these intellectual actions and by trying to understand through which political contexts his support toward these intellectual action derived from. In the third chapter, we have investigated the opinions of Ergun Göze on political figures playing important roles in Turkish political life and tried to explain why he was opposing to these political figures in the context of the conditions of those periods. Moreover, during the period when these political figures were the most active, important developments in Turkish political life have been told and military coup in Turkish political life have been given as historical summary and political, economic and social reasons causing these military coup have been explained.
