The investigation of knowledge construction process in relation to the concept of inequality

In recent years, constructivist learning theory has become great importance in our education system. With this theory, how students form information has gained great importance. This reveals the term abstraction, called creating information. The aim of this study is to examine the process of construction information about inequality among 8th grade students. The study was carried out with a total of five students with different mathematics achievement levels in a secondary school in Iğdır province. Mathematics course notes and teachers' opinions were taken into consideration while selecting students. Within the scope of the study, 4 problem were addressed to the students in a way to reveal their intellectual processes. And also, the validity and reliability of the questions were obtained by taking expert opinions. As the research is a case study, one of the qualitative research methods, student response papers, observation notes and transcripts of interviews were used as data collection tools. while analyzing student responses, cognitive actions of RBC+C abstraction model were taken into consideration At the end of the study, it was proved that high and medium level mathematics students were able to construct information and low level students could not realize abstraction. It was seen that the lack of preliminary information prevented the student from constructing the information. Also, the students who performed the abstraction followed different solutions and the students with high levels of achievement realized the abstraction more quickly. In addition, it was seen that the teacher's directing questions made it easier for the students to construction the information.
