TOKER KÖSE, Meltem, The Economic Dimension of Patent within the Framework of Intellectual Property Right and the Case of Turkey, Master Thesis, Çorum, 2018. In present time where the knowledge economies stand out, intellectual properties of creative processes are of paramount importance in terms of sustainable development and competition. Inventions emerged as the result of creative processes constitute the inputs of the technological development. Intellectual property law which is developed to protect the legal rights of inventors on their inventions is important for the commercialization of the inventions. The protection of intellectual property rights has become increasingly important both on national and on international levels, as it has contributed to economic growth by enabling inventions to be commercialized and also by encouraging the inventors for further innovation by protecting the rights of the inventor over their inventions. Much of the world's intellectual properties are produced by developed countries that attach great importance to R&D and invest significant amounts in R&D activities. As it is known, R&D is a prerequisite for sustainable economic growth since it is the source of innovation in knowledge based economies. The products resulting from R & D activities are indispensable for innovation since they are high-tech products with high R&D intensity in production. Besides being very costly, R&D activities also requires considerable amounts of time and effort. For this reason, especially the developed countries are interested in protection of these products as well as producing intellectual products with a high degree of R&D. The purpose of this study is to determine the importance and economic dimension of patents as one of the property rights after explaining the scope, types, historical development, and economic function of intellectual property rights. The relationship among R&D activities, economic growth and patents are examined and the developments in the areas of R&D and patent activities in Turkey are evaluated in this study Key Words: Intellectual Property Rights, Patent, Innovation, R&D Activities, Economic Growth.
