Physical activity effect on cardiovascular diseases risk factors and ten years coronary heart disease risk

Objective: Aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of physical activity on cardiovascular diseases risk factors and 10 year risk of developing coronary heart disease.Method: Study is a randomized controlled intervention trial. Individuals who had medium risk according to Framingham risk score formed the study group. Individuals who matched the criteria were distributed into intervention and control groups based on the streets they live. Intervention group participated to a physical activity program led by sport trainers for a duration of 6 week and with a 2 times in a week frequency. At the end of the trial weight, waist and hip circumference, blood pressure, Body mass index (BMI), fasting glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-C and LDL cholesterol values were measured and Framingham risk score was calculated. Group comparisons were made by Student t test and Mann Whitney U.Results: There were no significant difference between intervention and control group for the variables; age, gender, smoking, nutritional status, weight, BMI, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose and cholesterol levels. Weist and hip circumference was significantly lower at intervention group compared to control. Participation rate was very low both groups.Conclusion: The effect of physical activity programmes on health may not be viable at short duration and alone. It will be more benefical if the physical activity program will be applied for long term and along with health promoting interventions like healthy nutrition and smoking cessation and to encourage people to PA programme, developing different methodhs will be usefull.Key Words: : Cardiovascular disease risk factors, risk score, physical activity, intervention.
