Geographical situation of Gürün (Sıvas) as in administrative district

II SUMMARY PhD Thesis GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION OF GURUN (SIVAS) AS AN ADMINISTRATIVE DISTRICT Zeki BOYRAZ The University of Fırat The Institute of Social Science The Department of Geography ELAZI?-2003,Page:XVIII + 268 Gurun is located geographically on the upper Eupharates in the region of East Anatolia but it takes place in the Middle Anatolia as an administrative district. The district which has been inhabited since the old ages is in the boundaries of Sivas. According to the historical documants the district was known as Tegarma, Gunun. A town hall was established in Gurun in 1869. now it is the administrative centre of a 1792 km2 land and 61 villages. Gurun covers a land of plateau one of the main geomorfological units. The great part of the settlement is on the higher lands of the pleteau. The centrum is located on the valley on a wide pleteau of Tohma Stream covered with alluvions. The natural vegetation of the district consist of antropogenic (al) and natural step formations. The climatic characteristics are similar to the characteristics of the continental climate effective in East Anatolia and the Middle Anatolia. The main flowing waters of the district are Tohma Stream, Balıklı Tohma Stream and its subdivisions. The economical situation in Gurun is dependant on agriculture and stock-breeding. Agriculture with conditions is prevailing in a wide part of the district. The essential products are cereals. Sheep and goat breeding is improved. Stock-breeding in the pastures is also improved because there are wide lands of pasture in the district. According to the census of the year 2000 the number of population in Gurun is 26.742. beside there is a considerable loss of population which has begun since the last period and increased since 1980. the industrial facilities of the district are insufficient.
