Psychological capital, burnout levels and related factors in nurses

Objective This study was conducted as a cross-sectional study to determine psychological capital, burnout levels and related factors in nurses. Materials and Methods: 404 nurses were included from 550 nurses working at Aydın Adnan Menderes University Hospital. In line with this research universe, sampling was determined from within the universe by using the G-power sample size calculation method. Nurses' Personal Information Form, Psychological Capital Scale (PsyCap Questionnaire- PCQ) and Burnout Scale Short Form (BI-SF) were used to collect data. In the evaluation of the data; descriptive statistics, independent groups t test, ANOVA, chi-square test, correlation analysis tests were used. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were calculated to test the reliability. Results: The age of the nurses participating in the study was minimum 21 and maximum 52, and their average age was 31,55 ± 7,70. Nurses' Psychological Capital Scale total score average was 89,4623±13,80, self-efficacy sub-dimension 22,93±4,509, the hope sub- dimension was 23,08±4,190, the resilience sub-dimension was 23,07±4,051, the optimism sub-dimension was 20.37±3.921 and the mean score of the Short Form of Burnout Scale was 3,82±1,328. There was a weak inverse relationship between psychological capital total and sub-dimensions and burnout scale short form score averages. Conclusion: The burnout levels of the nurses who had high psychological capital total score averages were low. Nurses' psychological capital is weakly correlated with burnout.
