Nurses' level of compassion and factors related to care behaviors and determination of the effect of compassion on care behavior

The research was carried out in relational-descriptive type in order to determine the level of compassion of nurses and the factors related to care behaviors and the effect of compassion on care behavior. The research was carried out with 550 nurses working in the city hospital in Kayseri city center between October 2021 and January 2022 and included in the sample. The data of the study were obtained with the "Nurse Introductory Information Form" prepared by the researcher, the "Compassion Scale (CS)" to measure the compassion of the nurses towards the patients, and the "Caring Behaviors Scale-24 (CBS-24)" to evaluate the care behaviors of the nurses. In the study, written institutional permissions and research ethics approval were obtained. Research data, reliability were evaluated with Chronbaha Alpha analysis, descriptive statistics, Independent groups t test, ANOVA Analysis of Variance, Pearson Correlation Analysis and Linear Regression analysis. In the study, the level of significance was taken as p<0.05. In the study, the average age of the nurses was 33.18±8.05, 38.9% of them were 35 years and older, 70.7% were female, 61.3% were married, 86.9% had a bachelor's degree or higher, and 50.2% had less than their income, 37.1% , worked in the profession for 1-5 years and in the unit for 1-4 years, 35.8% in internal units, 93.3% in the position of service nurse, 77.5% worked in mixed shifts, 50.7% did not prefer the unit they worked in, 50.2% It was determined that there were 6-10 patients per nurse in the unit they worked in, 77.6% thought of nursing as a care-oriented profession, 49.1% were not satisfied with the nursing profession, and 92% evaluated nursing care as adequate in the unit they worked. In the study, it was determined that the factors that negatively affect the care in the unit where the nurses work are the insufficient number of nurses, the high number of patients given daily care, and the inability to spare time for care due to non-duty jobs. In the study, it was determined that the nurses' Compassion Scale scores were 4.01±0.53 on average and they had a good level of compassion, while they received an average of 5.14±0.68 points from the Caring Behaviors Scale and their patient care behaviors levels were high. It was determined that the nursing behavior scores of the nurses, who thought that nursing is not a care-oriented profession, had an insufficient number of nurses, the number of patients cared for, performing non-nursing jobs, lack of communication, lack of care materials and physical environment negatively affected caregiving, were found to be significantly low. In the study, it was determined that the level of compassion of nurses who were women, had children, worked in psychiatry units, cared for 6-10 patients a day, and were satisfied with nursing, was significantly higher. In the study, it was determined that there was a significant relationship between the compassion variable of nurses and the level of care behaviors, and the level of compassion of nurses significantly affected 18.4% of the level of care behaviors. As a result; In the study, it was determined that there was a positive and low-level significant relationship between the compassion and care behaviors of the nurses working in the city hospital, and the increase in the level of compassion significantly affected their care behaviors. It was determined that some of the descriptive and professional characteristics of the nurses working in the city hospital made a significant difference in the level of compassion and care behaviors.
