Internal turmoil in the period of Caliph Uthman in Kitab al-Futuh by Ibn A'sem al-Kufi

In this thesis, titled "The Period of Uthman in Kitab al-Futuh by Ibn A'sem al-Kufi," the period of Uthman's caliphate is narrated by organizing the narrations based on the main source, Kitab al-Futuh. The narration groups from other Islamic history sources are compared with the narrations from Kitab al-Futuh, and the commonalities and differences are identified. Evaluations are mentioned throughout the study. The thesis consists of an introduction and three chapters. The introduction provides information about the subject, scope, purpose, methodology, sources, and details about Ibn A'sem al-Kufi's life and work. The first chapter discusses Caliph Umar's views on the members of the shura, his dialogue with Jāsalik, the appointment of the shura, and the election of Caliph Uthman as the caliph, as documented in Kitab al-Futuh. The second chapter focuses on the internal disturbances during the period of Caliph Uthman, as recorded in Kitab al-Futuh. The third chapter covers the siege, assassination, and burial of Caliph Uthman, as described in Kitab al-Futuh. It has been observed that Ibn A'sem followed a Shi'i approach in narrating the events in Kitab al-Futuh. The author's usage of Shi'i perception and motifs in portraying the events and individuals during the reign of Caliph Uthman is evident. Criticism is not spared for individuals or groups targeted by Shi'ite thought. In particular, there is an emphasis on portraying Caliph Uthman, the administrative cadres in general, the Umayyads, and those who had a good relationship with the administration as being in the wrong. The thesis also highlights the perception that the people, especially the leaders of the Companions, were opposed to Hz. Osman and his relatives.
