The research of the relationship between social appearance anxiety elementary II. level students and their self-esteem

In this research, researcher focuses on second grade elemantary school students from Uskudar-Istanbul to investigate the relations level between social appearance anxiety and self esteem. This research is a comparison scanning model type of study of a relationship scanning model. Research is applied to second grade students, during the 2011-2012 semester. There are 516 students from Uskudar region of the city of İstanbul, who go to 3 private and 4 government schools which are run by Üsküdar District of Ministery of Education. There are 270 female and 245 male students who have participated to his research.In this research, the researcher has used "Self-concept scale for children by Piers Harris?, ?Social Appearance Anxiety Scale? as data collecting tools; the reseacher has also used a questionnaire designed by herself to collect data about unaffiliated variables of the research itself.The collected data from the research; is analyzed by the program called ?SPSS 17.0? and it is deciphered. The researcher has used frequency and percentage separation system to analyze the evidences; also to identify the groups,she has used One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Individual Group Testing and Kruskal Wallis-H Test; to identify the difference between groups she has used Post-hoc LSD techique and Man Whitney-U Analysis; to identifty the relation between the groups, the researcher has applied Pearson Product- Moment Correlation Formula.The collected evidences from the research indicate that, second grade elementary school students self-esteem lower factor and total points show meaningful differences on variances such as: status, gender, socio economic level, father?s education level, mother?s education level, number of siblings, which number of kids he/she is in family, school type, following popular people on media, choosing popular brands on clothing, watching paparazzi TV shows, fear of gaining weight, doing sports, playing musical instruments, actively using social media, spending period of time on internet, constantly playing video games and academic level. Evidences do not indicate any sign of significant differences between variance of ages and self-esteem.viAccording to our evidences, there are significant differences on variances such as:mother?s education level, fear of gaining weight,doing sports and academic success between Social Appearance Anxiety points. Same evidences indicate that, there are no differences on variances such as: age, status, gender, socio economic level, father?s education level, number of siblings; which number of kids he/she is in family, school type, following popular people on media, choosing popular brands on clothing, watching paparazzi TV shows, playing musicial instruments, actively using social media, spending period of time on internet and constantly playing video games between Social Appearance Anxiety points.To identify the relation between Self-concept lower points of scale for children by Piers Harris Piers , total points and the total points of Social Appearance Disorder Scale, researcher has used Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Formula; as a result , she has identified significant statistical negative relation between Self-concept scale total points for children by Piers Harris and Social Appearance Anxiety Scale total points and also same negative relation between Self-concept scale lower level points for children by Piers Harris and the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale total points as well.Key Words: Self-esteem, individuality, social appearance anxiety
