Awareness and usage of frequency levels of methods and techniques that are used in vocabulary teaching of elementary school teachers

The purpose of this research is to determine that elementary school teachers is aware of which methods and techniques used teaching words in order to enrich students' vocabulary words and the teachers of the usage of frequency of these methods and techniques which the teachers know. The exemplification of the research is made up of 250 elementary school teachers who have been working at primary schools in the district of Izmir Karabağlar Province, in the academic year of 2010-2011.It was studied that the elementary school teachers of the awareness level of the methods and techniques used in teaching vocabulary in the literature and their frequency of usage these methods and techniques were determined. The measurement tool is prepared in the form of four Likert-type grading. The grading options are determined as Slightly = 1, Sometimes = 2, Usually = 3, Always = 4. Statistical analysis of research data is computed with SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) for Windows 17.0 package program on PCs. Crosstabs is used in the analysis of the data received, ?To determine the awareness level of the elementary school teachers on the methods and techniques used in teaching vocabulary and also if the frequency of usage; have changed by gender using t-test, by seniority using analysis of variance and in this context Least Significence Test(LSD) is performed. The level of significance used in t-test and LSD is selected as ,05.According to the doing analysis, women have become more aware of text writing with vocabulary teaching method than men.It follows that teachers whose years of seniority are high are aware of methods and techniques of the combined method, mapping and game of vocabulary teaching more than the teachers whose years of seniority are less.It follows that teachers whose years of seniority are less are aware of methods and techniques of the streaming, concept development, repetition and gesture, facial expressions, depiction and imitation of vocabulary teaching more than the teachers whose years of seniority are high.According to the made analysis, men have used the use of synonyms, speech, script writing with vocabulary teaching method and techniques more often than women.It follows that teachers whose years of seniority are high) frequently use methods and techniques of the streaming, speech and repetition of vocabulary teaching more than the teachers whose years of seniority are less.It follows that teachers whose years of seniority are less frequently use methods and techniques of the mapping, game and iconography of vocabulary teaching more than the teachers whose years of seniority are high.Looking at the results of research, none of the teachers are aware of ?finger with vocabulary teaching and mental image with vocabulary teaching methods hence these methods are not used. The awareness level of vocabulary teaching method and techniques that are explained by samples and within elementary school cirruculum for Turkish 1-5 classes are seemed to be at the highest levels. For 18 method and techniques the ratio of awareness is over 50 %. But when it comes to frequency of use, these method and techniques drops to 11. This situation reveals that elementary school teachers are not using the method and techniques they aware of.The method and techniques for vocabulary teaching that are in literature needs to be added into cirruculum.Turkish textbooks for elementary school 1-5 classes need to be re-prepared with these method and techniques.These method and techniques need to be added as a course into elementary school undergraduate programs.Keywords: Elementary School Teachers, Vocabulary, Vocabulary Teaching, Method and Techniques.
