A research on the determination of the relations between job demands, job control, personality, job stress, safety culture and safety behavior in the civil aviation industry

Human factors cause a significant part of accidents in aviation industry. Stress, which is one of these human factors, can turn into job stress in the work environment and affect the level of safety behavior of the employees. Personality and organizational safety culture can change the level of safety behavior by moderating this effect. In this study, the effect of job demands and job control on job stress and safety behavior under the moderate of type A, B personality, the mediating role of job stress and the moderating role of safety culture in the relationship between job stress and safety behavior were investigated. In order to reveal these effects, data collected from pilots, air traffic controllers, maintenance technicians-engineers, flight dispatchers and ground services' apron staff working in airlines, airports, MRO's and ground handling companies were used (N=444). The data were tested with the correlation analysis, variance tests and structural equation model (SEM) to determine the effects and relationships within the scope of the research model. In addition, it was investigated demographic characteristics. The results showed that job stress has a negative effect on safety behavior and this effect is moderated by safety culture. However, it was found, job demands cause higher job stress in a type personality in the moderating effect of personality. In addition, job demands directly affects safety culture positively, it indirectly affects it negatively through job stress.
