A study on İslamic work ethi̇c and economi̇cs from soci̇ology of reli̇gi̇on

It is suggested that in XIX. century, the period of capitalization began in European countries with the influence of industrialization and modernization. And in today's world, capitalism is present in nearly all societies. Against the claims that Islam does not give permission to a capitalistic order, the secularistic behavior of devout businessmen attracts attention. In this way, our research, is guided by the theories of Marx and Weber about capitalism and religion, and portrays the work ethic from past to present, utilizing the Islamic work ethic reference sources. In our research, historical documentations and records are used as data which is the qualitative analysis technique. And as a result of this research, it is seen that fief system, ahi order, guilds and the economic policies applied in the establishment and the development periods did not give way to capitalism in Ottoman society but, with the influence of industrial revolution in Europe, capitalism started to flourish. But in Turkey it is clear that the political parties adopted different work ethics and economic policies, and the effects of this is seen in the political side and most of the time these policies are designated, the decision was independent from religion. In this political environment, Islam's political discourse and Islamic applications were tried to be implemented. But military coups did not favor these discourses. However, in the justice and development party government, the number and visibility of businessmen who is thought to be religious is increasing. It is observed that in daily life, businessmen are in a dilemma between Islamic and capitalistic work ethic. Key words: Capitalism, Islamic work ethic and economy, Work ethic in Turkey
