Evaluation of the views of the biology teachers working in İzmir about the new biology program

Purpose of this research is to evaluate the views on the problems which the biology teachers working in Izmir encountered during the implementation of the new biology program started to be implemented in the 2008-2009 academic term, the applicability of the new biology program and the biology teachers? expectations of the new biology program.The universe of this research consists of the biology teachers working at Secondary Schools in İzmir. And the sampling of our study consists of a total of 25 biology teachers and each five people are selected through random sampling from five different types of school in İzmir (high school of science, general high school, vocational high school, industrial vocational high school) by taking into account of districts and gender distribution.This study is a qualitative research and the data will be obtained through interviews. Semi-structured interview form was used to collect data by the researcher. This form is arranged by asking the opinions of three academics of Buca Education Faculty department of biology education and two other biology teachers and finalized after the three trials with the three biology teachers.This research reached the following conclusions:?Considering the teachers?s views, in-service training has to be done efficiently.?It is stated that there are problems with the distribution of subjects by year and more and unnecessary details are given in some subjects.?It is emphasized that in addition to biology lessons some lessons like research and practice should be added in the weekly course schedule to make biology lessons more efficient.?It ensues that different programs should be prepared for different types of schools especially for high schools of science, vocational high schools as we are sure that biology subjects have to be taught intensively or simply according to type of the schools.Key words: biology, education, program, constructivism
