The effect of psychological resilience on quality of life in patients with permanent pacemaker

Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted as a descriptive study to evaluate the effect of resilience on quality of life in patients with Permanent Pacemaker (pacemaker and intracardiac defibrillator). The population of the research is the patients with permanent pacemaker in the Cardiology Department of Adana City Training and Research Hospital, and the sample is; It consists of 155 patients with permanent pacemaker implanted, who were treated in the Cardiology Department of Adana City Training and Research Hospital between September and November 2019 and met the inclusion criteria of the study. Data: The data were collected using the "Descriptive Data Collection Form", "Adult Resilience Scale" and "SF-36 Quality of Life Scale" developed by the researcher by scanning the literature. Frequency tables, descriptive statistics, Independent Sample-t test, Spearman correlation test, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis H test, Mann-Whitney U test and Bonferroni correction were used to interpret the study findings. The direction of the research; mean age of the patients was 64.80±13.07 years, 54.8% were male, 41.9% had school, 87.7% were married and 40.6% were housewives. In the study, the patient's overall score on the "Psychological Resilience Scale" was 97.84±11.81, the physical function score scale of the SF-36 Quality of Life Scale was 41.58±28.49, the Mental Health mean score was 60.10±21.58, and the mean score of General Health Perception was determined as 47.52±21.02. There was a negative correlation between the physical functioning dimensions of the Quality-of-Life Scale and the family adjustment (r= -0.169, p=0.036) of the Resilience Scale sub-dimensions, and the social resources (r= -0.166, p=0.039) of the Resilience sub-dimensions. A very weak correlation was found. A very weak negative correlation was found in the physical role dimension of quality of life and the dimension of Psychological Resilience social resources (r= -0.171, p= 0.34). Between family adjustment and mental health scores (r= 0.160, p= 0.047) and social resources A very weak statistically significant positive correlation was found between proficiency and general health scores (r= 0.166, p= 0.039). As a result of the study, in addition to the physical conditions of patients with permanent pacemakers, their psychosocial problems, psychological resilience and quality of life should be evaluated regularly. It is important to include nurses more in arrhythmia outpatient clinics in a multidisciplinary team approach to increase psychological resilience and quality of life, in terms of patient education, counseling and follow-up early detection of mental problems.
