Popes of Avignon in church history

In the Catholic sect of Christianity, the Vatican is accepted as the center. The reason for this is the sentence "You are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my Church" in Matthew 16:18. Peter, which means rock in Latin, is also the leader of the Apostles and the person closest to Jesus Christ. Peter died in Rome in 64 A.D. and was buried there. Because of this phrase in the Gospels, Catholics built their headquarters in Rome, which they accepted as the Holy city. However, in the XIV. In the 19th century, the Church was moved to Avignon, France. After the Catholic Church abandoned Rome and moved to Avignon, this period was called the "Babylonian Exile of Christianity" by the Catholics. In this study, which consists of two parts, firstly the city of Avignon has been introduced, and then the events that incoming the Popes moved to the city were explained, and answers were sought to questions such as why the Church was moved to Avignon, what were the events in this period, and why this period was called exile. In the study, by making a literature review; Sources mostly in French were used and a descriptive method was adopted. The seven Popes residing in Avignon are discussed under different sub-headings, and the important events that took place during his period are tried to highlight.
