MicroRNA's role in colorectal carcinoma

Background and Aims: In both sexes colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer and after lung cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths overall . İn this study we investigated the role of microRNA gen polymorphism in colorectal carcinogenesis.Methods: In this study 84 patients with pathologically proven colorectal cancer who did not receive chemoterapy or radiotherapy were enrolled. Written informed concent was received from the patients in the begining of study. Patients age, sex, smoking/alcohol drinking status, lymph node involvement, vascular invasion, metastatic status, family history of colorectal cancer , CEA, CA 19-9 levels recorded. İn blood samples miRNA-196a-2 gene polymorphism were studied by using PCR-RFLP method. The parameters recorded for comparison with the gene polymorphisms SPSS.20 statistical program was used.Results: When MiRNA polymorphism and disease stage, lymph node involvement, vascular invasion, CEA, CA 19-9 level, BMI, tumor size and sex compared a statistically significant difference was not found . When stratified into the patient and control group showed a statistically significant association with polymorphisms of the gene was present. (P: 0,001)Conclusion: There is no association between MiRNA-196a-2 gene polymorphism CC genotype homozygous form and an increased risc of colorectal cancer . The small number of patients and patients with earlier stages taken in the sample may have negatively affected the results of our study.Key Words: Colorectal cancer, micro RNA, polymorphism
