Abstract (EN)
This study aims to make a detailed examination of the relationship between liberalism, which has emerged as the most important ideology especially for Western geography for nearly three hundred years, and communitarianism, which has a fifty-year history in its modern form, although its intellectual legacy dates back to ancient times. In this respect, the historical and philosophical origins of these two ideologies, which are regarded as opposing ideas, will be examined separately. It is thought that such an examination will make the scopes and principles of both ideologies understandable, and in this way it will also be useful with regard to comprehend tension points between these ideologies. Communitarianism putting community values in the centre and arguing that their effects are inevitable in the development of an individual's identity asserts that liberalism creates selfish and lonely individuals who are disconnected from social ties and this situation causes significant social problems. On the other hand, liberalism, which places the individual and the individual development at the center, leaves all kinds of decisions to the preferences of the individuals by aiming to provide the fair conditions that the individual can determine his own destiny. This dichotomy will be examined through the expressions of the prominent thinkers of both thoughts and the results will be tried to be conveyed as clear and objective as possible.
