Comparison of early term results of kyphoplasty patients under local and general anesthesia

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of our study is to compare the pain levels in percutaneous kyphoplasty, a commonly utilized procedure today, between general anesthesia and local anesthesia modalities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine Hospital's Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology between January 2021 and November 2022. Using a simple randomization method, among the included patients, 13 were designated as the study group (local anesthesia) and 15 as the control group (general anesthesia). Preoperative and postoperative VAS scores of the patients were recorded and compared. Patients' quality of social life data was collected and their ODS scores were determined and compared. Furthermore, the operation durations for both groups were recorded and compared. RESULTS: No significant difference (p > 0.05) was observed in preoperative VAS values between two groups. Postoperative VAS values in the study group were found to be significantly (p < 0.05) lower than the control group. In the control group, postoperative VAS values were significantly (p < 0.05) reduced compared to the preoperative period, similarly in the study group. The decline in postoperative VAS scores in the study group was significantly (p < 0.05) greater than in the control group. The operation duration in the control group was significantly (p < 0.05) longer than the study group. The median operation time of the study group was found to be 50% less than the median operation time of the control group. CONCLUSION: In this study, preoperative and postoperative VAS and ODS values were obtained and compared for the kyphoplasty method performed under both local and general anesthesia. No significant difference was found between the groups in terms of preoperative VAS and ODS values. However, when comparing preoperative and postoperative VAS and ODS values, a significant difference was identified between the groups. The study group patients exhibited significantly lower VAS and ODS values. The operation duration for the study group was determined to be 50% shorter than the general anesthesia group.
