Study of the relationship between smoking and burnout in physicians working in Muğla training and research Hospital

Aim: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between smoking and burnout status of physicians working in Muğla Training and Research Hospital. Material And Method: Our research is a cross-sectional study, and data were collected from 203 physicians working in Muğla Training and Research Hospital between June and August 2021, by filling out a questionnaire that included sociodemographic information and asked about smoking status and people's workplace, environment and personal relationships. A sociodemographic form prepared by scanning the literature on burnout and smoking cessation, Maslach Burnout Inventory and Fagerström Nicotine Dependence Test were used. The obtained data were evaluated with appropriate statistical methods and the statistical significance level was accepted as p<0.05 in all analyzes.. Results: A total of 203 physicians participated in the study. The mean age of the participants in the study was 33.8±8.2 years, and 53.7% of the participants were male and 46.3% were female. 60.6% of the participants are married, 55.2% are residents, 71.4% are physicians working in internal medicine, 44.8% have not made any scientific publications in the last 4 years, 71.9% no leave after shift, 46.3% of them have monthly income of 5000-1000 TL, 68.5% do not smoke and 73.4% of smokers want to quit smoking, 59.6% of them have Maslach Burnout Inventory Emotional Burnout sub-score was found to be high. When the scores of the participants from the Maslach Burnout Inventory sub-headings are compared; A significant difference was found in at least 1 sub-title in terms of gender, marital status, chronic disease anamnesis, duration of work, title, number of monthly shifts, number of weekend shifts, leave after shift, monthly average working time and number of publications in the last 4 years (p<0 .05). When the smoking status of the individuals participating in the study was compared, a significant difference was found only in terms of gender (p<0.05). In terms of the relationship between smoking and burnout, although no statistically significant relationship was found, it was observed that smokers got high scores in all 3 sub-headings. Conclusion: It has been shown in our study that the burnout status of physicians is associated with working conditions. However, according to the data we obtained in our study, there was no correlation between burnout and smoking. Nevertheless, it is extremely important to take measures to reduce the burnout status of physicians and to carry out studies on this. In addition, information and incentive policies should be implemented to reduce smoking among physicians and the whole society. Keywords: Burnout, smoking, physician, working conditions, Muğla
