Comparison of cognitive functions before and after shunt surgery in normal pressure hydrocephalus patients

Introduction and Objective: Our main objective was finding signs of recovery from the symptoms can be seen at normal-pressure hydrocephalus after shunt operation with using battery test.(BİLNOT)Material and Method: All of the subjects are have the normal-pressure hydrocephalus pathology and they exampled from 22 normal-pressure hydrocephalus patients who consulted to Istanbul University Medicine Faculty Depratment of Neurology- U.S.A Behavioral Neurology policlinic and 8 normal-pressure hydrocephalus patirents from Istanbul Bilim University Sisli Florence Nightingale Hospital Behavioral Neurology policlinic. Symptoms: %53 of the patiens are male and %47 of them are female, age average founded as59. Results of the stroop test points before shunt come by higher than after shunt. Statistically there is a meaningfull difference of the stroop test scores between before and after shunt operation (p<0.05). Outcome of the average scores of clock drawing test after shunt, founded higher that the score of before shunt. Statistically there is a meaningfull difference between scores of the clock drawing test before and after shunt operation (p<0.05). According to chi square test, there is a meaningfull difference between Luria Alternating graphic test scores after measuring before and after shunt operation(p<0.05). %90 of patients who don't have perseveration after shunt also don't have it before the shunt and the %90 of patients who possesses perseveration after shunt also have it before shunt too. Conclusion: Mortality of aged people of Turkish population increasing recent years. Defects like memory disorders, cognitive disorders, personality changes with varying psychiatrict to behavioral symptoms occur at patients who've been through shunt surgery. Implementation of these type of researchs are crucial for early detection and precaution to memory and attention problems of society. Number of the examples in this research limited to 30. To achieve extensive comparison between visual and linguistic memory, this number can be increased.
