Abstract (EN)

Obesity is an actual issue due to growing prevelance and comorbities. Obesity alone is not only serious disease, but it also takes role in pathogenesis of many diseases such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. This study aimed to research the effects of frequent follows-ups on blood sugar and body weights. It was conducted between 03.23.2011- 06.30.2012 in Gaziantep 25 Aralık State Hospital. Sixty obese patients with type 2 Diabetes who have attended to the order of arrival: 30 patients were monitored once a month (normal), 30 patients called controls were monitored bi-weekly (often). In follow-ups; nutritional status of the patients were assessed, anthropometric measurements and blood glucose levels were measured and they were trained according to their situation and diet lists were prepared for each patient. The parameters of the patients are evaluated according to the frequency of follow-up 6 months later. The knowledge status of the importance of diabetes and realising either blood glucose decreases or increases showed statistically significant increase only in the 2nd group. The average number of meals per day significantly increased in both groups after the follow-ups (p<0,05). Fasting period and bread consumption is also significantly decreased in both groups (p<0,05). Howewer, there was no statistically significant difference in these variables in terms of amount of the change between 2 groups (p>0,005). As for food consumption frequency,of foods that should be avoided were significantly decreased in second group (monitored bi-weekly). After follow-ups, significant reduction in anthropometric parameters and Hba1c levels was seen in both groups (p<0,05). In both groups, it was seen that the recommended diets and education were positively influenced the weight loss and life style. In consequence of the study, it is concluded that in obesity and Type 2 diabetes, the medical nutrition therapy can change positively the knowledge and blood glucose levels of the patients, regardless of the frequency of follow up, when an efficient and qualified education is given.
