Verb usage in narrative texts: An analysis of key stage 2 Turkish text book

In this study, the semantic properties of verbs, the use of tense and person in verbs, and the voice properties of verbs in narrative texts in the second stage Turkish language textbooks of primary education were examined. The aim was to determine whether there is a connection between the semantic properties of verbs used in narrative texts in the second stage Turkish language textbooks of primary education, the use of tense and person in verbs, the voice properties of verbs, and the positive features of narrative texts. Turkish language textbooks for the second stage of primary education were downloaded from EBA to identify the verbs used in narrative texts, and the verbs were listed in a corpus using the Ant-Conc program. The obtained list was classified by performing lemmatisation, homophony disambiguation, verb identification, and polysemy disambiguation. The verbs were semantically classified using the verb classification adapted by Bozaner (2022) for Turkish. The use of tense and person in verbs, as well as the voice properties of verbs, were also identified, and the number of verbs used for each group and the frequency of verb usage were listed. As a result of the study, the semantic, tense, person, and voice properties of verbs used in narrative texts in the second stage Turkish language textbooks of primary education were compared with the positive and negative features of narrative texts. It was determined that there is a similar relationship between the verbs used in narrative texts in the second stage Turkish language textbooks of primary education and the positive and negative features of narrative texts.
