Abstract (EN)
Purpose: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disease characterized by oligo-anovulation, hyperandrogenism in women. The appearance of polycystic ovaries by ultrasonic imaging is typical. Studies have shown that oculer surface affected in PCOS cases. The aim of this study; is to evaluate the ocular surface and corneal layers by confocal microscope in patients with PCOS. Materials and Methods: There were 41 cases in the patient group. Cases with PKOS were being followed up in Meram Medical Faculty, Obstetrics and Gynecology Outpatient Clinic. The control group consisted of 22 healthy person. There were evoluated only one eye of the patient in both groups. The research was planned as a single-center, prospective clinical study. There were performed complete ophthalmological examinations of the cases in both groups. Ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, tear break up time test (BUT), Schirmer-I test were applied to the cases. Corneal layers were evaluated with an in vivo confocal microscope (IVKM). Nerve fiber analysis was performed with Automatic CCMetrics software, v 2.0 program (University of Manchester, UK) and dendritic cell analysis was performed by manual counting from these sections. The results obtained were statistically evaluated between the PKOS and control groups. Results: The avarage age of the patients in PKOS was 25.07 ± 4.84 years and the avarage age of the control group was found to be 24.09 ± 3.87 years. There was no significant difference between the PKOS and control groups in terms of age. Schirmer-I test score and anterior stromal keratocyte levels were found to be statistically significantly lower in the PCOS group compared to the control group (p values, respectively; p=0.002; p=0.020). A statistically significant difference was found between the PCOS and control groups in BUT scores (p<0.001). The number of dendritic cells in the PCOS group was statistically higher than the control group, and the corneal nerve fiber density was lower (respectively; p<0.001; p=0.044).
