Examination of picture story books used in pre-school education institutions in terms of reasoning skills and revealing children's expressions of reasonings in book

Subject research consists of two correlated cases. First of those aims to study the written and visual context of the picture story books, which are produced for pre-school toddlers and being used by teachers in class rooms, containing reasoning skills. With respect to subject aim, a survey has been conducted amoong the pre-school teachers and it has been requested from them to write down all the books that they use in their class rooms, which they think that supports development of reasoning skills. As a result of the survey, 120 picture story books had been verified as documents which later on examined by contextual and descriptive analysis. Results of the examination suggests that, not only the texts of picture story books but also their visuals contain, inductional, deductional, hypothetical, symbolic, probabilistic, proportional, visual spatial, casual and mathematical reasoning skills. In addition to above, text parts contain metaphorical and analogy reasoning skills. Second case of the research aims to study the reasoning skills which emerge from the toddlers' statements while examinatory reading the picture story books. Top 8 most prefered picture books which are being prefered by the teachers as per the survey results had been picked. Those books had read to and examined with toddlers, who attend to 2 separate pre-school institutions. Vocal statements of toddlers had been recorded while the picture book being read and examined. Later on, vocal statements of toddlers had been studied by content analysis method. As a result, it has been observed that the toddlers by correlating the current page being read and examined and the previous page which had been read earlier, the toddlers express inductional, deductional, hypothetical, symbolic, probabilistic, proportional, visual spatial, casual and mathematical reasoning factors on their statements and it has been also observed that the toddlers' use different reasoning factors in their questions.
