History and criteria of rijal criticism: In the context of Ibn Hibban's Muqaddimah al-Macrûhîn

Ibn Hibban, who lived towards the end of the mutaqaddimin period, is one leading hadith munaqqid of the fourth/tenth century. One of his most important works is al-Mecrûhîn, which he wrote about daeef and matrook râvis. The introduction of the work is one of the most comprehensive texts on the criticism of the rijâl written until that time. The data presented by Ibn Hibban in the Muqaddimah sheds light on the situation of the rijal criticism activity in the early period. In this study, the history and criteria of rijal criticism have been revealed by examining them specifically in the context of the Muqaddimah. In this context, firstly, the legitimacy of the criticism of the rical was discussed, then the data presented by Ibn Hibban about the history of the criticism of the rijal were systematically evaluated. In the last part of the thesis, the criticism criteria of the author in the context of the narrator's reasons for cerh were examined. This part, which explains the method followed in al-Mecrûhîn, also reveals the general principles of ricâl criticism. As a result of the thesis, the situation of the criticism of the rijâl in the the fourth/tenth century and the scientific tradition on which Ibn Hibban bases his criticism criteria have been determined.
