Abstract (EN)
Goths, were known as a barbarian tribe that influenced the Roman Empire in the III century AD and European history in the subsequent centuries. One of the narratives mentions that Goths migrated from Scandinavia to Poland following their King Berig, and to the north of the Black Sea region under the leadership of King Filimer, referring to the earlier years of their appearance in history. The cities in Asia Minor, which peacefully existed with little attention to security until Goth aggression, were subject to violent attacks at a weak period of the Roman Empire. Particularly, the regions including Thrace, Macedonia, Illyria and Asia Minor were impacted heavily and were pushed into chaos, where soon after they all began to build city walls for protection. The Roman Empire lost its control between 235 and 284, due to internal conflicts as well as external attacks by Sasani in the east and Goths and other barbarian tribes in the north. They only regained control, particularly against the Goths, after the victory of Claudius II in 269 AD in Nassius. In this study, the Goths, their origins, the geographies in which they lived and their relations with the Roman Empire were researched. The attacks on cities in Asia Minor and the consequences of these attacks were explained in light of ancient sources, numerical and pigraphical data. It is hoped this research will provide further assistance to researchers in academic circles on a topic that has been rarely studied in Turkey; the difficult periods of the Roman Empire in the third century AD, the threats they faced from the north and the extent to which they handled it. Keywords: Berig, Filimer, Claudius II, Nassius, Asia Minor
