Examination of the level of burnout in healthcare professionals and its affecting factors

Abstract (EN)

Introduction and Purpose: Burnout syndrome is seen in people-oriented professions, and healthcare workers are among the professional groups that experience burnout the most. Our study aimed to examine the level of burnout in healthcare professionals and the impact of affecting factors on quality of life. Materials and Methods: The study was designed as a cross-sectional type and 225 healthcare professionals working at Dicle University Faculty of Medicine Hospital were included in the study. The Maslach Burnout Scale (MTÖ) and the Quality of Life Scale for Employees were administered to the participants along with the sociodemographic data form. Statistical analysis of the data was done in SPSS 24.0. Results: 53.8% of the participants were women, 64% were married and 50.2% were between the ages of 31-45. 18.7% of the participants work on shift basis, 60% reported that they chose the profession willingly, and 72.9% reported that they were exposed to violence. Participants' average scores on MBI subscales; emotional exhaustion was found to be 20.49±0.54, depersonalization was 7.20±0.29, and lack of personal accomplishment was 13.01±0.38. The mean score of the sub-dimensions of PedsQL was calculated as occupational satisfaction 27.18±0.70, burnout 21.48±0.43, and sensory fatigue 16.98±0.58. Statistically significant differences were found between gender, occupational groups, chronic disease, choosing a profession willingly, having problems with patients and/or relatives, having problems with colleagues, alcohol use and economic status and PedsQL sub-dimensions (p<0,05). Marital status, professional groups, choosing the profession willingly, weekly working hours, working order, exposure to violence, having problems with patients and/or relatives of patients, having problems with colleagues, a statistically significant difference was found between alcohol use and economic status and MBI sub-dimensions (p<0,05). Conclusion and Recommendations: As a result of our research, single healthcare workers, shift workers, those with long weekly working hours, Those who are exposed to violence while working, those who have frequent problems with patients and/or their relatives It has been observed that burnout is experienced more frequently and causes a decrease in quality of life.
