Abstract (EN)
Introduction: Smoking is a public health problem in the etiology of many chronic diseases all over the world. Nonetheless, smoking is common in our society. One of the health problems in which smoking is charged is sleep disorders. Nicotine itself is known to have arousal effect and smoking is generally associated with sleep disorders. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effect of smoking on sleep quality in our study. Materials and Methods: Healthy volunteers who applied to the family medicine policlinics of our hospital and also met inclusion criteria participated in our study. Demographic information questionnaire, Pittsburgh sleep quality index, Epworth sleepiness scale and Fagerström nicotine dependence scale were applied to the participants. Results: A total of 513 healthy volunteers participated in our study (n = 312 active and passive smokers, n = 201 in the control group). The proportion of people with poor sleep quality in the study group was significantly higher than the proportion of control group (45.83% vs 32.33%, p <0.001). The high rate of poor sleep quality was also found in the subgroup (active smokers / the group with secondhand cigarette smoke exposure / control group) analysis (respectively %46.90, %44.06, %32.33, p=0.009) Conclusion: Sleep quality was significantly impaired in smoker individuals. This disorder also observed in both active smokers and the people with secondhand smoke exposure. Secondhand smoke exposure was also associated with sleep disturbance at least as much as the active smokers.
