Expectations, problems and solutions for postgraduate academic advisory in study of primary school teacher education

The research aims to reveal the status of graduate academic advising in the field of primary school teacher education. In this direction, academicians and graduate students; It aims to examine their perceptions of the phenomenon of academic advising, their expectations from academic advising, the problems they experience during the academic advising process and the solution proposals for these problems. In line with the stated purposes, a qualitative research approach was adopted in the study. Phenomenology, one of the qualitative research types, was used as a model in the research. The sample of the research consists of the graduate education programs of Akdeniz University, Anadolu University, Afyon Kocatepe University, Gazi University, Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, Pamukkale University, Dokuz Eylül University and Ege University in the 2020-2021 academic year. undergraduate students, doctoral students and academicians who carry out academic consultancy in the same program. According to the findings of the research regarding the perceptions of graduate education academic advising, it was seen that both academicians and graduate students had a positive perception about the phenomenon of academic advising. It was also revealed that both academicians and graduate students generally define academic advising as a guiding process. According to the findings regarding the expectations regarding graduate education academic advising; It has been observed that both academicians and graduate students have various expectations from each other about academic advising. When these expectations are examined, most of the advisors from the graduate students; It has been observed that they expect them to start their postgraduate education with a certain goal, to acquire the skills related to the postgraduate education process during the course period, and to be equipped as individuals on some issues related to both academy and life. Graduate students, on the other hand, mostly; It has been revealed that they expect them to provide timely feedback on e-mails and corrections related to studies, to empathize with the student, to be accessible, to spare time and to do one-on-one hands-on work. According to the findings regarding the problems experienced in graduate education academic advising; It has been revealed that academicians have problems in academic advising mostly due to the deficiencies of graduate students in both scientific research skills and scientific research methods at the thesis stage. On the other hand, graduate students have the most problems in the academic advising process; It has been revealed that the academicians do not provide timely feedback, are not adequately guided in research methods, and work with a consultant they do not prefer. In addition, it has been revealed that the most important problem of the students who continue their postgraduate education in the field of classroom teaching is not being able to find academicians who are experts in the field, and accordingly, they cannot carry out studies on the subject and field they want in classroom education. According to the findings regarding the solution proposals for the problems experienced in graduate education academic advising; Among the solution proposals of academicians, there are two issues that are most emphasized. The first of these; especially in the way that graduate students go through a one-year process such as scientific preparation and start their graduate courses in that way. The second is that the academicians who will carry out academic advising must definitely undergo a training on "academic advising" and a framework should be drawn for academic advising. When the solution suggestions of graduate students are examined; It has been seen that the most frequent opinion of the students as a solution proposal is to choose the people who will counsel them during their graduate education. After that, it was revealed that the most frequent opinion of the students as a solution proposal was to receive detailed training on "academic writing" and "analysis programs".
