Examination of the achievements of the cultural and heritage unit in social studies textbooks

In this study examines the second unit of the 7th grade Social Studies textbook since 2018-2019 academic year, the establishment and promotion period of the Ottoman Empire, settlement, and national policies of the nation system, military, social and cultural structure in the Ottoman Empire, geographical discoveries, renaissance, enlightenment, reform, French revolution, industrial revolution, colonialism. In the unit examined; The Basic Law of National Education No: 1739 was taken into consideration in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of National Education Textbooks and Educational Tools and the gains of the 2018 Social Studies Education Program. It is aimed to examine the Cultural and Heritage Unit in terms of physical, educational, visual, language and expression features. This study, which is a case study, is one of the qualitative research models. In summary, the results of the research; It was observed that the issues of military and cultural structure in the Ottoman Empire were handled without going into details, and that the cultural structure in the same unit with the establishment and promotion of the Ottoman Empire, the awakening issues in Europe disrupted the chronological order and the information intertwined. In addition, it is understood that many foreign words in the unit are not written according to the rules of Turkish Language Institution and the maps used to describe the space are wrong in terms of scaling, coloring and content. This situation revealed that the principles of National Education Basic Law, Textbooks and Educational Tools Regulation were ignored in the preparation of the textbook.
