Abstract (EN)
This research interesets the history of gambling from Tanzimat to Early Republic (1839-1938) as a phenomenon. The Tanzimat Edict, which was announced in 1839, was the forerunner and pioneer of great changes and transformations. The subject of the thesis is the process from the Tanzimat period, which is the main point of the Ottoman westernization, to the end of the early Republic. Starting with mythological narratives, it also discusses how gambling evolves and the emergence of casinos in Europe. It also tries to explain the history of playing cards and the history of gambling games. Thesis reveals the most played games and the development of the places where gambling played from the Ottoman to the end of the early republic. In doing so, it focused on changes in everyday life.
