Abstract (EN)

Located in the heart of Central Asia, Samarkand – the "Pearl of Turkestan" and the "City Where Time Stands Still" – stands out as one of the most significant historical and cultural cities of the region. Situated at the crossroads of major trade routes such as the Silk Road, the city has hosted diverse civilizations and served as a melting pot of cultures throughout history. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Samarkand continues to attract global attention with its unique architectural monuments and spiritual atmosphere. Nevertheless, despite its remarkable heritage, the city's share in international tourism remains limited. This thesis examines the tourism potential of Samarkand from a sustainability perspective, identifying its strengths and weaknesses, while evaluating opportunities and threats through a SWOT analysis. Based on statistical data, literature review, and comparative examples from Türkiye, the study reveals key challenges such as insufficient global promotion, infrastructural shortcomings, and the issue of seasonality in tourism demand. At the same time, it highlights opportunities for cultural tourism development, digital tourism applications, and heritage-based economic diversification. The findings demonstrate that sustainable tourism strategies—implemented through collaboration among local authorities, the private sector, and international organizations—are crucial for positioning Samarkand as a competitive global tourism destination that supports both economic development and the preservation of cultural heritage.
