The evaluation of contemporary additions in restoration works of historical buildings from the perspective of space organization types

There is an important heritage built with a wide variety of building materials and construction systems belonging to different centuries, which reveals the common values and historical accumulations of all people from past to present. This legacy bridges the past and the future. Historical buildings that have undergone many changes over time can survive as long as they can adapt to today's conditions. For this reason, it should be ensured that it is protected and maintained by the right methods. The first step in protecting historical buildings to prevent the danger of their destruction is to put them under legal protection. In order to ensure the comfort requirements of historical buildings today, to make them safe against natural disasters, they should be constantly maintained and the necessary interventions should be made before the damage progresses. Within the scope of this study, the concept of the contemporary addition, which is one of the types of interventions made in the process of protection and restoration of historical buildings, has been examined. A sample group consisting of 50 samples from the world and 35 samples from Turkey, where contemporary addition applications were made, was determined. These sample groups were selected from residential, public, commercial, cultural, educational, industrial heritage, and religious buildings. Contemporary addition, which are articulated in line with the spatial and organizational needs of historical buildings, form the basis of the study and it is aimed to create a resource that can be used as a reference in contemporary addition applications in historical buildings. Within the scope of this study, the concept of conservation and restoration, their historical development, intervention methods applied to structures, concepts related to the construction of contemporary addition to the historical buildings have been investigated, and detailed studies have been conducted on how it should be handled in international regulations. How contemporary addition added to historical buildings can be designed without damaging the texture and historical structure of the city in which they are located, approach decisions, design criteria have been discussed in detail. As a result, the general criteria related to the contemporary addition concept that emerged in the 1800s are still valid today. Contemporary addition should be constructed with modern materials and technology in a way that is easy to understand, different from the current style of the building, and in a way that does not overshadow an important feature of the traditional structure. The historical building and its surroundings should be designed by analyzing them meticulously. Contemporary addition should be shaped according to the existing structure, should not add additional load to the structure, and should be light. It should be detachable and attachable when necessary, and it should be designed in such a way that it does not dominate the historical structure, considering the width, height, height dimensions of the existing structure and it should be designed per the understanding of the age in which it is located. Transparency should be preferred in order not to disrupt the visual integrity.
