Abstract (EN)

The main purpose of this thesis is to examine the relationship between human identity and subjective, psychological and physical well-being, and the mediating role of the basic psychological needs in this relationship. The thesis consists of two sections. In the first part of the thesis, two versions of the Identification with all Humanity Scale were adapted into Turkish to measure human identity in Turkish culture. While one version remained unchanged, the other was modified to incorporate cultural values specific to the Turkish context. To examine the psychometric properties of the two versions of the scale, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted using data collected from 229 students (%75.1 women) aged between 18 and 35 years (Meanage = 21.27, SD = 2.64). Similarly, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was carried out using data from 220 participants (%57.7 men) with an age range of 18-54 years (Meanage = 32.26 SD = .54) from various cities in Turkey. For both Turkish versions of the scale, the factor analytic approach yielded a two-factor structure with high internal consistency reliability. In the second part of the thesis, the mediation role of autonomy, competence and relatedness in the relationship between identification with all humanity and subjective well-being, psychological well-being and physical health was examined. The participants of the second study consisted of 552 adults (331 females, 221 males) residing in different cities of Turkey, and their ages ranged between 18 and 70 years (Meanage = 29.53 SD = 8.67). The structural equation model analyses have indicated that autonomy, competence, and relatedness mediate the relationship between identification with all humanity and subjective well-being, psychological well-being, and physical health. The findings of the current study have revealed the importance of human identity beyond its potential positive effects on intergroup relations.
