The modeling of nomophobia by basic psychological needs satisfaction, self-control and emotion regulation variables among university students

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of nomophobia with basic psychological needs satisfaction, self-control, and emotion regulation variables in university students. In addition, it was examined whether the nomophobia levels of university students significantly differed according to gender. Therefore, the present study was a crossectional design in which the relationships between the research variables were examined within the framework of the structural equation model. The sample of the study consisted of 688 (362 female/326 male) university students attending Dokuz Eylul University and Pamukkale University. The stratificatied sampling, and the convenient sampling methods were used to reach this sample. "Personal Information Form" (prepared by the researcher), "Nomophobia Scale", "Need Satisfaction Scale", "Self-Control and Self-Management Scale", and "Emotion Regulation Questionnaire" were at ministered to the participants. According to the research results, it was seeen that more than half of the participants had a mild nomophobic tendency, and about one of every three participants had a moderate nomophobic tendency. However, the participants, it was observed that the nomophobia levels did not significantly differ according to gender. There was a significant relationship between psychological needs, self-control, and nomophobia; it was determined that there was no significant relationship between psychological needs, and emotion regulation. It was also found that there was no significant relationship between nomophobia, and emotion regulation. A significant negatively correlation was also found between self-control, and nomophobia. In line with the purpose of the study, it was determined that self-control played a mediator role in the relationship between psychological needs and nomophobia. The research was carried out in the university sample. In the future, the validity of this model can be tested in different samples. Nomophobia is recognized as an important ongoing problem today. The effectiveness of these programs can be tested with experimental studies by preparing psychoeducational programs for the prevention of nomophobia.
