Design, construction and control of an autonomous mobile rescue robot with visual feedback
The construction of a smart autonomous mobile robot system that can operate in an anonymous environment can be difficult [4]. Building an autonomous mobile robot requires collecting data from sensors and cameras in order to recognize the surrounding environment, get knowledge of existing landmarks, and figure out its position and orientation. The most common platform utilized for robot motion design is ROS (Robot Operating System) [29][35] and for object detection YOLO v3 (You Only Look Once, version 3) is a common choice [1]. Additionally, the autonomous system needs motion planning in a systematic way to avoid obstacles by using RPLIDAR A1 or other sensing methods generating the feedback signals required for control of motion around occupied spaces [2]. One of the most effective and versatile feedback systems for mobile robot control can be constructed using visual feedback, which relies on a high-resolution camera that processes the image in real-time and the result is fed back to the control system for decision making. In this research, results of design and construction of an autonomous mobile rescue robot for finding victims in hazardous disaster areas through video data are presented. It is aimed to find victims via applying video as a data collection and feedback generation tool in the autonomous mobile robot control system. The visual feedback and YOLO v3 are used not only for finding victims but also for motion control. Our autonomous mobile robot is designed to move smoothly to the victim's direction and avoids obstacles by using ROS Global Planner.

Development of a robotic system with hybrid locomotion for both indoor and outdoor fire detection operations
In this thesis; a robotic system with ladder & obstacle climbing and fire detection capabilities was developed. The robotic system was designed and produced as adaptable for both indoor and outdoor applications. An adaptive three wheel legged locomotion system to provide the obstacle climbing and straight motions was developed. The mathematical models were derived for the hybrid locomotion system. "Direction Based Angle Calculation" approach was proposed and the required experimental tests were applied to check the performance of the robotic system with the developed algorithm. A motion decision algorithm to classify the obstacles as ladder, negligible or negotiable according to the height and shape of the obstacle was structured. "Fire Search and Find" and "Fire Detection" algorithms were constructed to find the fire candidates and to determine the probabilities. Several experimental tests were applied to the mechanicals systems and algorithms of the ladder climbing fire detection robot (Performance tests of motion and transmission systems, local path planning and obstacle avoidance, motion mode decision, fire detection). The obtained test results showed that the transmission and motion systems are capable for both ladder climbing and linear motions. The direction based angle calculation approach is suitable and satisfactory for local path planning and obstacle avoidance applications. Omnidirectional robot indoor localization by using vision sensors and artificial CCs beacons with coppeliasim program
The major goal of this project is to design and implement an indoor localization method for Omni-directional mobile robot based on trilateration technique, Color Code signatures (CCs) as artificial passive beacons, and vision sensor. The robot is guided by the vision sensor, which detects color-coded beacons. The artificial passive beacons are designed as three disks positioned one on top of the others with different sizes and colors (primary colors only, RGB). The three disks share the same center. The designed beacons are placed on the ceiling to be visible from most locations within the room. The robot's model, controller, and localization method are implemented and evaluated inside the CoppeliaSim environment. The simulation results show that the CCs detecting algorithm enables the robot to discover the designed beacons, achieve an accurate localization and reach the target.

Robust whole-body control for legged robots
This thesis aims to propose a robust whole-body locomotion controller for legged robots. To this end, it offers the centroidal momentum observer control algorithm, which could be a very useful tool for providing robust dynamic motion control in eliminating parameter uncertainty for legged locomotion. The control method based on centroidal momentum dynamics is essential for whole-body control. The method considers floating base dynamics when synthesizing controllers such that the base frame is not firmly connected to the ground; the base frame is freely floating. Therefore it can be applied to a wide range of mobile robotic systems. The method was tested using a simulated one-legged robot and whole-body humanoid models. As a result, we observe that the centroidal momentum observer control algorithm could be beneficial for whole-body robot robustness and stabilization.

This thesis introduces a novel mobile modular C-legged robot featuring a variable stiffness mechanism. The robot's capability to adjust the level of compliance is achieved through a tendon-driven actuation system typically found in continuum robots. This system, in conjunction with 3D-printed soft backbones, forms the core of the robot's modular design. A significant contribution of this work lies in developing and controlling the variable stiffness mechanism for its integration into SMoLBot. The robot design, in particular the backbone design was iteratively refined through repeated case studies, enhancing the robot's ability to sense obstacles and optimize stiffness quantification using data from conductive backbones. The research also examined the advantages of modulating backbone stiffness, particularly in improving the robot's performance in uneven terrain in rigid and soft configurations. The work in the thesis is concluded by detailing the implementation of a PI stiffness controller that leverages voltage feedback from the backbones to adjust the robot's stiffness to intermediate levels. This controller allows the robot to autonomously operate variable stiffness mechanisms while demonstrating another potential use of soft sensors for mobile robots. The cyclic load tests established a correlation between voltage data from the backbones and stiffness, with force and displacement measurements confirming the relation across different stiffness levels.

Soft Modular Legged roBot (SMoLBot) is a legged, foldable, modular, miniature robot with soft backbones. SMoLBot's body and locomotion mechanisms are folded out of acetate sheets and its compliant connection mechanisms are molded from Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). High maneuverability and smooth walking pattern can be achieved in miniature robots if high stiffness kinematic parts are connected with compliant components, providing the robot structural compliance and better adaptability to different surfaces. SMoLBot is exploiting features from origami-inspired robots and soft robots, such as low weight and low cost foldable rigid structures and adaptable soft connection mechanisms made of PDMS. Every single module in SMoLBot is actuated and controlled by two separate DC motors, that enable gait modification and a higher degree of freedom on controlling the motion and body undulation of the robot in turning and rough terrain locomotion. Each module has 44.5 mm width, 16.75 mm length, and 15 mm height, which is approximately the same size as two DC motors and a Li-Po battery. The dynamic formulation of SMoLBot is obtained using Newton-Euler formulation and it depends on the physical parameters of the contact and closed-chain kinematic analysis of the feet. The dynamic model framework is proposed by determining the dynamic locomotion parameters of each module as an individual system, as well as, considering the dynamics of the whole robot; i.e. the robot is modeled as one system and modules are considered to be set of flexible links connected to each other, within this system. Kinematic constraints among these modules are obtained by considering the types of backbones integrated in the robot. Various types of backbones are used within the experiments that are classified into two groups: rigid, and compliant backbones. Experimental results of SMoLBot running/walking with different symmetrical and asymmetrical gates validate the dynamic model presented in this thesis. Additional to the dynamic model, the effect of the backbone stiffness on the locomotion of the legged miniature modular robots with multiple numbers of modules is studied. Analyses comparing the velocity of SMoLBot with different numbers of modules and different types of backbones are presented using the proposed dynamic model. The results indicate that there is an optimum torsional stiffness of the backbone for a legged miniature modular robot that maximizes the robot's translational velocity. Additionally, we can show that, for a given backbone stiffness or a specific range of compliance between the modules, there is an optimum number of feet for the miniature robots. Furthermore, in this thesis, a locomotion study that investigates the motion patterns of the running/walking multi-legged modular miniature robots with soft module connections, is conducted. The locomotion study is done using the presented dynamic model and results are verified using SMoLBot. The optimum feet sequence and the optimum stride length of a multi-legged robot are derived using the locomotion analyses, and the dynamic and kinematic formulations. The optimum gait analysis of the multi-legged SMoLBots represents different but unique feet contact sequence patterns for each robot with a different module number and diverse ranges of compliance between the modules. Furthermore, analysis considering the effect of various feet failure cases on the locomotion of a multi-legged robot with soft/rigid backbones, is conducted. This study investigates the locomotion behavior of a legged miniature robot with different combinations of the non-functioning feet. Additionally, a case-sensitivity study of an $n$-legged SMoLBot's locomotion on its individual modules during the operation, is also conducted. This study investigates the modular robot's locomotion with multiple different failure cases where each particular case only considers the effect of an individual module failure on the overall motion of the robot, while the gate is not altered.

Multi-body dynamic modeling of non-rigid and legged robots is an active research area with the goal of investigating the interaction of a robot with its environment and its resulting locomotion. The results of such studies can be used to build a simulation that will be used for the iterative process of the mechanical design of the robot, and the algorithm design of its high- and low-level controllers. The dynamics of soft robots is more challenging comparing to rigid robots because of the partial derivatives and the shape integrals existing in the dynamic models, and the literature is open to improvement. The subject of this study is S-Quad, a soft and miniature quadruped with c-shaped legs. To analyze the effect of the compliance of its body and legs to its locomotion, a soft-body dynamic model has been developed. The development process starts with the rigid-body dynamic analysis, which will be a base for the soft-body dynamic analysis and used to examine the rigid body - rigid legs (RBRL) version of the robot. The Newton-Euler method has been used to develop this model, in which the contact forces are estimated with the viscoelasticity theory. Scenarios of different model parameters were simulated to estimate the motion of the robot. With the obtained results the effects of the model parameters were discussed, and then appropriate parameters have been selected. The contact analysis of a curved leg inside of the robot dynamics, in which any intersection algorithm is not used, is an advantageous aspect of this study. The compliance of the legs has been incorporated into this dynamic analysis with a non-linear viscoelastic model. The dependency of the leg compliance to the roll angle of the leg was derived from Castigliano's theorem. Then, the motion of the rigid body - soft leg (RBSL) robot was estimated accordingly. The comparison of the RBRL and the RBSL results was utilized to interpret the effect of the leg compliance. The modeling and the integration with robot dynamics of this compliant leg model is a novel aspect of this model. An offline Finite Element Analysis has been conducted to estimate the deflections of the soft body under the contact forces, which were exported from the RBRL simulation. The estimated deflections were put back into this simulation to obtain the simulation of soft body - rigid legs (SBRL) robot. Thus, the capability of the developed model to include body deflections has been proven. Finally, the RBRL and the RBSL robot simulations have been verified with the experiments conducted with a motion capture system. These experimental results were also used to interpret the advantages and disadvantages of using a soft body in the robot.
