The (non-)territorialization of "Kurdistan" in the Middle East between 1919 and 1990: A critical geopolitical approach
This thesis analyses the reasons of why a certain "Kurdistan" could not be established as a geopolitical entity within the Middle East between the years 1919 and 1990. By using critical geopolitics as the theoretical framework, the thesis focuses on the effects of continuous deterritorialization and reterritorialization of the Kurdistan as a geopolitical entity as well as civilizational and ideological geopolitical discourses developed by four states in the region, being Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria. A threefold argument is proposed to explain why an independent or an autonomous Kurdistan could not be formed at the chosen time frame. The internal factors underline the traditional tribal and more recent territorial divisions among the Kurdish tribes preventing the Kurds to establish a common geopolitical discourse describing a particular and territorially-defined "Kurdistan". The external factors emphasize the policies and geopolitical discourses developed by states to preserve their territorial integrity and to prevent any separatist tendency within their own states. Finally, the third set of factors cross-linked internal and external factors. It focuses on the cooperative and conflictual transversal connections between sovereign states and Kurdish political movements. Accordingly, some sovereign states tended to cooperate with the Kurdish groups of rival states in a way to undermine the power of the Kurdish groups within itself and some Kurdish political movements tended to cooperate with the neighboring state to undermine the power of the home state. All in all, the period between 1919 and 1990 witnessed the failure of the projects to establish an autonomous if not an independent Kurdistan. The invisible actor of the Mesopotamian oil: Caloust Gulbenkian "Mr. five percent"
This dissertation reveals the importance of individuals in the political economy of Mesopotamian oil resources in the foundation process of Iraq after the World War I. One of the consequences of the First World War was the emergence of need for the establisment of a new order in the oil rich ex-Ottoman territories after the disintegration of the empire. The industrialized Western states at that time were in need of more and more energy due to inreasing use of energy both in military and civil areas. Since energy became a matter of priority for these countries, the oil-rich Middle East which meant to get access to new resources became an attractive region for them. The territory was also economically attractive and commercially lucrative for the major oil companies of that time. Oil was the common denominator between states and companies and there was a ground for both struggle and collaboration among these actors. In this process which ended with the the foundation of Iraq and the formation of first oil cartel, the role of Caloust Gulbenkian was interesting and noteworthy. The importance of the role of individuals in the foundation process of Iraq has been scrutinized within the framework of descriptive analysis and the chronology generated from the oil related events of that period of time. According to the findings of the study, the efforts of Caloust Gulbenkian who was also known as "Mr. Five Percent"- the nickname pointing to his role in the process and his share in Iraqi oil- had been influential in bringing together the relevant statesmen and executives of oil companies. The long lasting struggle over Middle Eastern oil ended after a series negotiations, conferences and agreements between states and major oil companies of that time. The struggle over the sharing of the Middle Eastern oil had also been effective in the drawing of the boundaries of Iraq within the new system established in the region after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. This thesis shows that in the foundation process of Iraq the individual level of analysis is important as well as the state level in order to better understand this period. The main causes of economic underdevelopment of the Middle East
The Middle East is the main source of oil reserves. In reality, the region consists of different countries with widely divergent economic structure and development, ranging from the oil Gulf monarchies, which have highest levels of national income to the poor countries like Yemen. Since the Second World War, the region's economic performance has been below its potential. According to the growth rate, the region's economic performance was relatively weak, and other indicators show that this region is an underdeveloped region. After the Second World War, the Middle East countries, with the exception of Israel and Turkey, lost their valuable opportunities for economic development. The research reveals and examines the obstacles and difficulties that the region faces in development. Why has this region lost so many opportunities? What is the main factor of underdevelopment of this region? Why both countries Israel and Turkey have a good record in economic development but other countries not? What is the main political, economic and cultural obstacles in which affect the economics of the region? What is the good development strategy for the region? The thesis explains the main factors of underdeveloped for Middle Eastern countries. The main factors investigated in this thesis are rentier state, the weakness of private sector and large public sector, political instability from oriental despotism and autocratic regime, and domination of religious worldwide.
Historical background and the present state of the Russian-Syrian relations
This thesis touches upon the Russian-Syrian relations, which have historical roots, cooperation traditions and further development prospects. The history of relations between peoples of Russia and Syria should be considered in terms of centuries, not years. In this thesis, we dealt with the relationship between Russia and Syria before and after the Soviet Union was formed, as well as since 1991 when Russia became a federal state. Relations between Russia and Syria have developed harmoniously from the first years of establishment of the USSR. In many respects, similar views and positions of Syria and the Soviet Union were determined by the existing situation in the Middle East. Therefore, resolving the conflict in that region was perhaps one of the most important areas of foreign policy of the two countries. Syria and the USSR in a coherent fashion advocated radical improvements in the international environment. Syria consistently supported a number of initiatives taken by the Soviet Union, which were focused both on removing the nuclear threat and cessation of the arms race, and on enduring solution to regional conflicts by political means. Meanwhile, the Soviet Union has always been one of the most important strategic partners for Syria, and even a primary military partner permanently supporting Syria in the Middle East. Collapse of the Soviet Union and establishing the new Russia raised a number of urgent questions of the role of the Russian Federation within the system of international relations, understanding of national domestic and foreign political interests and searching for the best ways to ensure those interests. Over the recent years, Russia has paid considerable attention to the relationship with the Syrian Arab Republic. Taking into account the major trends in the development of the political situation in and around the Middle East, Russia and Syria remain strategic partners and continue supporting each other in the international arena.
The influence of Alhouthi movement on international relations in the Middle East region
After Yemeni revolution in 2011, the Houthi movement emerged to the forefront of the political scene in Yemen. By force, it has been able to impose itself as a political partner in the national dialogue and the process of peaceful transition of power. To support its political position, the Houthi movement depends on arms to extend various regions of Yemen. It takes advantage of the political and constitutional vacuum in Yemen and by the time it was able to overthrow the legitimate government and occupies the capitol easily. After that, Houthi movement has become a key engine of the political scene in Yemen that of course will effect on the political scene in the Middle East. All that affects made some changes in international relationship in the Middle East, so researcher will try to monitor these changes, which may lead to the emergenfce of new alliances in the Middle East. Also it tries to answer this question of whether we are at the edge of a new Middle East or not. The role of religion in Iranian foreign policy as a soft power in the Middle East
Middle East lies in a geopolitical area which has gained attraction of the regional and the global powers throughout the history. This region is the connecting bridge between Asia, Europe and Africa, which encompasses different nationalities and religions and till today it has been politically unstable mainly because of direct and indirect religious conflicts. After Islam and its division into two main sub groups by the name of Sunni and Shia, this process continued and till today competition between the two groups Sunnis and Shias has been carried on in the Middle East. Iran Islamic Revolution happened as a remarkable evolution in the Shia-centric community of Iran and after that the leaders of Iran did not focus only in their internal affairs, but rather shifted their concentration on regional politics, particularly through Shia Revolutionists in order to play a considerably active role in the Middle Eastern region. Iran got an active position in the world, especially in the Middle East, after the revolution as a Shia-centric community. Different educational, cultural and political activities of Iran outside its borders are clear examples of Iran's international actions after the revolution. This thesis is based on the research regarding the methods and approachs that Iran has used to expand its borders and influence in the Middle East. It also investigates the elements and factors which Iran has used to have influence over the Middle East. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate and search on foreign politics of Iran and the usage of religion as a soft power in the Middle East. In this essay the religious factors of Iranian politics would be researched and the way it is used. In addition to these, this essay would research about the political and cultural opposition between Iran and other countries in the Middle East. After investigating about the usage of religious factors of Iran in the Middle East, the role of Iran as a regional power and a pro-Shia in the Middle East will be discussed. It will be clarified how Iran has used the Shia factor as a tool in order to reach its political and cultural aims in the Middle East. Comparative analysis of the politics put into practice by Iran and U.S.A in the Middle East region
Relations between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran are influenced by complex historical, geopolitical, and ideological factors. To have a genuine understanding of the relations between the U.S. and Iran requires knowledge of the historical, ideological, and philosophical grounding of the two nations. This report will analyze the history of both the United States and Iran, their geopolitical situation, and the worldview which shapes their foreign policy. Only with this comprehensive level of understanding can American policymakers create a foreign policy towards Iran which is in the national interest of the United States. This report argues that the primary goal of United States foreign policy for the last century is the creation of a liberal world order which respects the rule of law promotes free trade, and respects individual rights. The direction of American foreign policy might be shifting towards a nationalist direction under the leadership of President Trump. Iranian foreign policy is guided by the principle of maintaining its national sovereignty. The primary influence on Iranian philosophical and ideological development is Shia Islam, which serves to re-enforce the independence of Iran from its Sunni neighbors. The tense relationship between the United States and Iran is a product of the Islamic Revolution of 1979, in which a theocratic revolutionary movement overthrew the Shah, an ally of the United States, and took American diplomats hostage. This report recommends a re-examination of Iranian United States relations. The Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States share a common interest in suppressing radical Sunni extremist groups such as ISIS, and Iran's willingness to sign the Iran Deal indicates a desire to deal in good faith with the United States. This report recommends a re-examination of the Bush II/Obama era policy of regime change and instead argues that is in the national interest to have a policy towards Iran, and the Middle East, which emphasizes stability rather than ideology.
Revolutionary change versus counter-revolutionary status quo: Tracing the reactions of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to the Arab Spring
By exceeding traditional molds of small states, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as two small states of the Persian Gulf, have conducted very interventionist and proactive foreign policy in response to the Arab Spring within the two region-wide confrontations between revolutionary and counter-revolutionary blocks. This thesis purposes to find a proper answer to the following question by firstly analyzing their foreign policies responses one by one, then comparing the roots of differences and similarities: Why and how did Qatar and the UAE as similar small states pro-actively take different revolutionary and counter-revolutionary positions as a reaction to the Arab Spring? To this end, this research wields the process-tracing method to identify causal mechanisms driving these policies and indicating manifestation of these policies at the operational level. Then, the results are compared focusing on their unit-level differences within the neo-classical realist framework. In this context, I argue that the systemic forces unleashed by the Arab Spring-led change created powerful incentives for these states' opportunistic power pursuit across the region. However, unit-level features as an intervening variable shaped their power and threat assessments regarding the Arab Spring-led regional change, which eventually produced their opposing revolutionary and counter-revolutionary positions.
Entrepreneurial exit in the Middle East and North Africa
This study investigates the main determinants of entrepreneurial exit in the Middle East and North Africa region, through the employment of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Adult Population Survey (APS) Data. We estimate that human capital, financial capital, social capital, gender, and age have contrasting effects on entrepreneurial exit. Through our analysis, we have discerned that the MENA region shares similar determinants of exit with the world, with the exception of gender. It is found that male entrepreneurs have a higher exit rate than female entrepreneurs. The results suggest policy makers must begin incorporating educational programs to cultivate entrepreneurs from a younger age, in addition to encouraging entrepreneurial culture in order to reinforce MENA's entrepreneurial prospects for the future.
National role conceptions and orientations of Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia as competing regional powers in the Middle East: 1979-2020
This study utilizes role theory to examine the role conceptions and behavior of the three competing regional powers in the Middle East, Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia since 1979. Theoretically, the research aims at developing a contest-based regional role approach by highlighting four role behavior dimensions to study Middle Eastern regional powerhood and competition. Such role behavior applied to the Middle East revolves around four role behavioral dimensions that shape competing regional powers as a causal dimension (role sources), orientational (role orientations), expectational (role expectations), and contestational (role challenges). Being the Middle East a conflictive region, this thesis argues that regional powers seek regional power status by playing leading regional roles that vary between cooperative, competitive, and status quo. These cooperative roles are expected to contribute to regionalism, competitive roles are expected to bid hegemony, and status quo roles are expected to either maintain or challenge the regional power status quo. Analytically, the primary purpose of the study is to contribute to the Middle East IR scholarship by debating and understanding the regional role competition for regional power status by Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia since 1979. By reflecting on the structural and ideational sources of roles, the study aims to explain how the shift and consistency of national role conceptions—those regional-oriented roles—shape foreign policy orientations and expectations and thus influence the dynamics of regional cooperation and competition. The study also explores how the Islamic Revolution of Iran shaped Iran's revisionist regional roles that affected the regional security order and triggered counter-regional roles of other regional powers, especially Saudi Arabia. Finally, it seeks to clarify that, while Turkey and Saudi Arabia are two Sunni status quo regional powers, they have acted differently since the Arab Spring uprisings and played competing roles; the former plays revolutionary liberal roles, and the latter plays counter-revolutionary conservative roles. Thus, such regional dynamics have transformed the regional status quo and these three regional powers' roles. Keywords: Role Theory, Middle East, Regional Powers, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia
A comparison of Egytian revolutions: 1952 and 2011
States which are structured in Middle East after World War I especially by western powers' intervention has not met basic necessities of people they may wait from governments. Demands such as equality before laws, economic means to live with dignity, political participation did not get any response from governments. These kind of demands for rights came with different forms like revolutions with wide social support, military coups or power struggles inside the ruling elites. In this regard during 1950's there were revolutions and military coups in middle eastern countries, especially Egypt was pioneer throughout the region. Mentioned demands were main motivation of these social events. But generally lead by minor social segments with Arab nationalistic and socialist motives and did not meet people's expectations at the end. At the beginning western powers were very reluctant to approach this revolutionary regimes, then interest base cooperation had established. People's demands for basic rights and freedoms in the region countries in recent years from 2011 and onwards increased without any or minor responses from governments, which become insufferable stage. This situation championed social pressures for change. "Revolutions" in region's countries and their outcomes again questioned whether it is progress or deterioration like outcomes of 1950's revolts. In this thesis, revolutions in these two different time period will be comparatively examined, reasons for social revolts underlined and future study proposals offered. Egypt has chosen as a case study, although many countries in the regions go through similar processes, as it is most populated and more influence in the region as whole. This study aims to contribute to the historical comparative studies in international academic discipline as well.
Irak'ta devlet inşasında dış güçlerin rolü: İngiltere ve A.B.D. işgalleri altında devlet inşası
