Abstract (EN)

Aim: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease which demands serious importance due to the high costs and complications arised during acute and/or chronic periods in our country and in the world. Glycemic controls decrease the risk of developing acute complications, prevents micro and macrovascular complications, rehabilitate other accompanying problems and aims to improve patient's life quality. Our objective was to determine the current situation of DM patients by examining the glycemic controls of Type 2 DM patients consulted to a family practice polyclinic by evaluating their demographic properties, comorbid diseases and the treatment they received in a period of 1 year. Materials and methods: The data of 604 Diabetes Mellitus patients who were admitted to Ankara Atatürk Training and Research Hospital Family Medicine District Polyclinics (Çukurambar, İçişleri Bakanlığı, TEDAŞ YÖK, Danıştay ve Beşevler) between January 1st, 2015 and December 31th, 2015 were collected from files of Ankara Ataturk Training and Research Hospital (AEAH). The study was planned as a cross sectional and retrospective archive research. After taking ethical approval, the data (age, gender, HbA1c levels, comorbid diseases and treatment plan) were collected from the computer system of the hospital. SPSS 20,0 program has been used for the statistical analysis. Chi-Square, Kolmogorov-Smirnov/Shapiro-Wilk tests, Mann Withney-U tests, Spearman correlation analysis tests are used for comparisons. The statistical analysis of significance is accepted as p<0,05 for the interpretation of the results. Results: The patients participating in this research were 57,3% female and 42,7% male. The mean age of the patients was 61,2±11,7. The mean level of HbA1c was obtained as 6,1%. The minimum and maximum levels were obtained for the ages 28 and 92 as 4,6% and 13,8% respectively. The HbA1c levels were <7% for 80,1% of all patients; 79,8% and 80,3% for male and female patients respectively. 53.15% of the patients didn't receive any medical treatment, 34% received insulin treatment, and 266 patients received Oral Anti-Diabetic (OAD) treatment, and 17% received both insulin and OAD treatment. Conclusions: DM increases in Turkey as well as in the world. With good glycemic controls the complications with high mortalities can be prevented, and the life quality of the patients can be improved. 80.10% of all patients HbA1c median value was below 7%, showing good glycemic control. It is observed that good glycemic control for patients not receiving any medical treatment can be acchieved, when the life style change suggestions are repeated by physicians at every visit and carried to practice by patients. So this shows that the life style change suggestions have significant importance.
