Barışın inşası müzeciliği; Kıbrıs'ta "yeni" tarihler ve kültürel miraslar yaratmak

The discipline of museology experienced a major paradigm shift in the late 1960s and 1970s, termed the new museology movement, during which it evolved into a flexible domain of practice encompassing such objectives as the achievement of major social and even economic changes in society. This led to a proliferation of museum types ranging from social and neighborhood museums to ecomuseums. This dissertation builds on this paradigm shift to suggest and delineate a "new" and "specific" type of museology, a multi and cross-disciplinary domain of practice called the museology of peacebuilding which it conceptualizes as the discipline and practice of an empowering pedagogy that uses museological strategies to re- establish the individual's perception and relationship to reality to improve relations amongst estranged communities. The design thinking methodology is employed throughout the dissertation and a corresponding selective approach in curating the new discipline of the museology of peacebuilding out of theories, insights and practices from the disciplines of museology, peacebuilding, heritage and education amongst others. Adopting a contextual approach, the inquiry is conducted on the island of Cyprus and the methodology for the museology of peacebuilding is established as a local, place and people-based one designed to bridge the distance between the two major communities, namely the Turkish and Greek Cypriots. Adopting also a pragmatic approach, a proposal is made, the Collaborative Histories and Heritages Platform of Cyprus (CHHP of Cyprus), for which a case-study is conducted within the Ayios Loukas (Ayluga/Ay Yıldız) neighborhood of the walled city of Nicosia. The practice of the museology of peacebuilding is thus more specifically described as the making of "new" histories and heritages for the island of Cyprus through the eye-witness accounts and memories of the islanders. The dissertation suggests that it is these "small" histories and heritages as compiled through oral history, the new "hybrid" narratives of Cyprus, that have the potential to dilute and dismantle the authorized heritage discourses of the Turkish North and Greek South creating in this way the necessary sub-stratum for the development of peace on the island. The dissertation also argues that the museology of peacebuilding thus delineated paves the way for "other" specific types of museologies to emerge, increasing the social relevance of the discipline of museology and charting a more effective path for its future development and evolution.
