Abstract (EN)

Since the discovery of containers, liner shipping has become an indispensable phenomenon in the transportation industry. It is one of the main means through which cargo is transported around the globe. The various seaports scattered along the coasts of countries in different continents are connected to each other through several services created by shipping lines, transporting cargo in containers from one country to the other. The combination of these seaports and shipping service add up to form liner shipping networks. These networks form the grounds on which international trade is carried out. Trade and liner shipping networks are therefore two highly interconnected variables. This study examines the factors that affect the relationship between liner shipping networks and trade volume in order to understand the different dynamics that exist between them. The Liner shipping network between West Africa and Turkey is used as a case study. Five ports in the West African region were selected and the analysis was based on these ports. Using a qualitative method, information was gathered by carrying out a survey that involved participants from different sectors in the area of study. The findings show five main factors that affect liner shipping networks and trade volume which include; financial factors, infrastructural factors, network structure design, competition/cooperation and trade factors. Hinging on these factors, carriers, policymakers, terminal operators and port planners could make better decisions in order to benefit their different objectives and agenda.
