Abstract (EN)

In our study, we aimed to the investigate the effect of propolis on the acetylcholinesterase and oxidative stress in the brain of mouse model of experimental epilepsy. A total of 35 mice were divided into 5 groups as control group, pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) group, propolis group, pentylenetetrazole + propolis group and valproic acid + pentylenetetrazole group to include 7 mice in each group. The experimental groups were treated with following procedures every day for seven days, in the control group mice were treated with serum physiologic; in the PTZ group mice were injected with SF+PTZ (65 mg/kg); in the propolis group mice were firstly treated with propolis (100 mg/kg) and then injected with serum physiologic after 45 minutes; in the propolis + pentylenetetrazole group mice were firstly treated with propolis (100 mg/kg) and then injected with PTZ (65 mg/kg) after 45 minutes; in the valproic acid + pentylenetetrazole group mice were firstly injected with valproic acid (100 mg/kg) and then with PTZ (65 mg/kg) after 45 minutes. Each group was evaluated and recorded for to seizure detection, seizure scores and total seizure duration. After the application, the mice in all groups were anesthetized and analysed for acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity in the brain tissue and also for changes in total antioxidant capasity (TAS) and total oxidant capacity (TOS) levels which are indicators for oxidatives stress. TAS levels in the brain tissue were found to be statistically significantly lower in the PTZ group compared with control group (p<0.05). TAS levels in the brain tissue were found to be statistically significantly higher in the propolis group compared with PTZ+propolis group, PTZ+ valproic acid group and valproic acid group (p<0.05). The TOS levels in the brain tissue were found to be statistically significantly higher in the PTZ group compared with control group (p<0.05). The TOS levels in the brain tissue were found to be statistically significantly lower in the propolis group compared with PTZ+propolis group, PTZ + valproic acid group and PTZ group (p<0.05). As a conclusion, propolis extract exhibited a reducing effect on behavioral symptoms of epilepsy and oxidative stres. Furthermore, this investigation showed that propolis extract can prevent the concomitant epileptic complications.
