Abstract (EN)

Reading is looking at the written symbols and letters, combining the visual symbols and giving them meaning in your mind, either verbally or silently. Reading comprehension activities are frequently included in the Turkish lesson. KWL (Know-Want-Learn) the technique is one of these techniques which is applied in this research. This study, which aims to determine the effect of the Know-Want-Learn technique on the reading comprehension skills of 2nd grade primary school students, was carried out with a quasi-experimental method. The study group of the research consisted of 46 students in total, 23 of whom were in the experimental group and 23 students in the control group, in a primary school located in the Toroslar district of Mersin. The achievement levels of the groups were compared before implementation and the Mann-Whitney U test was performed and it was determined that both groups had similar levels of success. In the experimental group, reading comprehension exercises were created with the KWL (Know-Want-Learn) technique were applied. In the control group, reading comprehension exercises from the curriculum were applied in the Turkish lesson. According to the results of the Wilcoxon signed rank test after administration, there was a significant difference between the pre- and post-test OABT total scores, literal comprehension subdimension scores, and comprehension subdimension scores depth of the experimental group (p<0.05). This research reveals that the KWL (Know-Want-Learn) technique is an effective method in the reading comprehension skills of 2nd grade primary school students. The significant improvement in the level of reading comprehension of the students in the experimental group shows that the technique contributes to success. These results show that the use of the KWL (Know-Want-Learn) technique in the school environment and in teaching processes can be an important technique to increase reading comprehension skills.
