Abstract (EN)
Associated with the developments in communication technologies and digitalization, the ways and areas of people's reaction have also changed. Along with the increase in the use of social media in society, social events have moved to these channels, and individuals have started to show their reactions to social events in these environments. The news about violence against women, which became visible on social media in the 2010s, and the shares and reactions of users have come to the forefront even more today. In addition to the purpose of entertainment and socialization, social media, which has been actively used for digital activism and receive news in recent years, has become more prominent with becoming a current issue. Day by day, the sharing of violence against women on social media (articles, news, videos, photos) has started to set the agenda. In this study, the phenomenon of violence against women in social media was tried to be analysed sociologically. For this purpose, firstly, the posts about violence against women on various social media networks were researched, then "digital activist movements" related to violence against women on social media were surveyed. Thus, it was tried to understand the effect of become a current issue violence against women posts that gained visibility on social media and the digital activist movements created by social media users on this issue on social media. In the study, in-depth interviews and qualitative content analysis were conducted using qualitative research method. Firstly, the first 100 posts made by Instagram users to the news of Başak Cengiz's death on the Instagram page of the We Will Stop Femicide platform were systematically analysed and content analysed. Secondly, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 16 young social media users using a semi-structured interview form. In line with the data obtained, it was determined that the posts made on social media, the videos of the moment of violence and the content related to the details of the events have an important the effect of become a current issue. On the contrary, it has also been determined that the high number of news and posts on violence against women on social media and the constant exposure of people to these contents cause depersonalisation symptoms such as dullness, boredom and passing the news. Another important finding is that social media has become a channel for the search for justice as a result of the increasing distrust of justice in the participants regarding the widespread violence against women and murders in our society.
